Becoming Leader

Managing a team

Whether you are a Manager, a Coordinator or a Teamleader, you all face the same challenge when it comes to managing a team: bringing a diverse and varied group of people together to achieve one or more goals by working together.

This is what Henry Ford said almost two centuries ago: “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, working together is success. “It’s quite a challenge for a person taking responsibility for a team for the first time… just as it is for a seasoned team leader taking the reins of another team.

Fortunately, there are adhoc tools for anyone who wants to learn how to manage a team effectively.

The keys to team management

As an African proverb says: “Alone we go faster, together we go further. “It’s true… in theory. The problem is that we live in the real world, not in theory. In the real world, you don’t necessarily choose your team. You may have been able to choose some of the members and the others are people you’ve inherited at random. And yet, your task is still to get everyone on your team to work together to achieve a common goal.

But X doesn’t like Y and refuses to talk to Z… and of course you don’t have a magic wand that will make all the problems disappear! What can you do?

Take the time to discover each one of them, communicate as much as possible with your collaborators. Explain to them in a clear and direct way what is going on in your department, your company or even your group.

Listen to them, ask them what they expect from one another and how they want to work together. Encourage exchange and open discussion. Chase away the shadows, be honest about opportunities for promotion or development.

Value everyone’s participation in the project, celebrate successes and accomplishments together… in short, create a climate of trust and maintain it by encouraging informal exchanges.

Also talk about your difficulties, share your emotions in a respectful manner and be open to new ideas, as this will encourage your team members to dare to express different opinions or to propose unexplored avenues.

Conversely, avoid any favouritism, banish any unequal treatment of your management style. Don’t let a situation get out of hand either: it’s better to burst the abscess quickly than to risk the implosion of your team. Be there without being a hyper manager who controls every detail over and over again. That’s it, summarizing in a few lines the keys to managing a team. As easy as pie!

The challenges of team management?

Easy to say, complex to set up, you might say, because it all depends on the particular situation of the team and the type of team.

While it is true that one team is not another and that you don’t manage a team of synchronized swimmers like a team of computer engineers or like a team of workers on a production line, the tips and tricks described above are entirely applicable in whole or in part with any team.

Listening to one another, communicating openly, encouraging exchange between collaborators and sitting around the table to decide together how we want to function in times of peace as well as in times of crisis are the basics of managing a team.

However, there is a pre-requisite: that the person in charge of the team is willing to manage the team and also that he or she knows himself or herself well enough to have confidence in his or her skills and be aware of his or her grey areas and areas for development. A leadership training like the one offered by our program is a good start to get to know yourself as a person, as a team leader and as a strategist thinking about the future development of your department, your company and/or your field of activity.

The added value of the training is without a doubt the coaching in the field which allows your coach, your mentor to observe the dynamics of your team and to help you improve and fluidify your team management while respecting your individuality and that of your team.

Our program “Becoming Leader” is not only a training in leadership and team management. Our team of experts offers a range of services from training to coaching, consulting and mentoring. A project, a special request? We also offer our clients tailor-made programs.
