Managing performance

Leadership challenges

Use performance management tools

Driving performance is an essential element in ensuring that we achieve the organization’s goals and objectives.

Implementing tools to manage performance is necessary: Just as when we are on the road to a specific location, our dashboard and GPS are our “benchmarks” to ensure that we arrive at the right place, at the right time, without breakdowns or violations; we also need tools to manage performance within our organization.

The absence of management leads to the implementation of actions, with the good will of people, but potentially with the risks of deviating from objectives and/or not achieving the impact, the expected results.

Using tools that allow us to regularly check that we are always moving towards the defined ambition, that every risk or concern is addressed and every success is celebrated is therefore one of the keys of a leader and his team. Obvious and… easy to say…

Implementing performance management tools raises many questions: what “system” are we going to use as a team? In what form do we want to establish our dashboard? What are the key elements needed? What are the right indicators to select so that they can guide us towards our objectives and also be “warning bells” when necessary? How do we select the indicators and ensure that they will not create unwanted behaviors? How often are we going to look at our chart? How do we facilitate performance meetings? How do we manage perceptions of “micro-management”? This is a non-exhaustive list of questions that will be on the mind of the team leader, as well as the employees.

The leader’s primary mission in setting up the tools will be to address each question, to ensure that the team is both able to frame the objectives and behaviors well and that everyone can be reassured, that one can dare to talk about non-performance or underperformance without it being perceived as a “chase for the guilty” and so on. Managing both the need for performance and respect for individuals is a real balancing act, and requires each leader and team member to work together.

It is very often by including the relevant stakeholders from the very beginning of the tool implementation project, by working together in a participative way that the best results are obtained, those that satisfy both the needs of each team member and the needs of the organization in terms of achieving objectives.

The Becoming Leader team, with 75 years of experience in companies, is committed to giving leaders the right tools, supporting them and their teams, making a difference in the field with these tools and allowing them to develop their full leadership potential. We address topics such as performance management, current tools and approaches – in real and virtual environments -, team-based applications, operational deployment.

We can help you in the reflection and implementation of a visual performance management system, as well as your regular meetings (governance). In order to transform each problem or risk into an opportunity, problem-solving techniques are one of the proposed keys.

Creating a performance culture also means making sure, beyond the contribution of knowledge, know-how, to work together the “savoir-être”, the individual behaviors that create this environment.

Creating such a culture also requires being able to manage conflicts, to establish a climate of trust and transparent communication in a caring manner, to create the space to give and receive feedback, to understand and adapt one’s leadership style to one’s collaborators or partners.

Our corporate experience has made us aware of the criticality and importance of these personal and interpersonal aspects.

Based on our experience, we accompany you throughout the implementation of performance management, with this particular view and sensitivity to the human being.

The Becoming Leader team is experienced in all the tools and processes it passes on to its clients. This learning is also an opportunity to share the team’s experience and that of other participants on the implementation of these tools in the field.
